HORNTOWN, Va. – A devastating accident in Accomack County on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of 54-year-old Robert Jude Vandornick Jr. According to Virginia State Police, Vandornick was driving a golf cart in his backyard in the 35000 block of Robin Lane when the vehicle overturned, fatally pinning him underneath.

The incident occurred as Vandornick navigated a hill and rounded a curve, causing the cart to veer off an embankment. State police confirmed there was no medical incident that triggered the accident, and Vandornick was pronounced dead at the scene.

This tragic accident highlights the dangers of golf carts on uneven or hilly terrain. While golf carts are widely used for recreational and practical purposes, their stability can be compromised on slopes or when making sharp turns, leading to rollovers and serious injuries.

Golf Cart Safety Tips for Hilly Terrain

To help prevent such tragedies, here are several safety tips when operating a golf cart, especially in areas with hills or uneven ground:

  1. Drive Slowly on Slopes: Always reduce speed to maintain cart control when navigating hilly terrain. Rapid turns or speeding can easily lead to an overturn.
  2. Avoid Sharp Turns on Hills: Avoid making sharp turns up or down a hill. Approach curves slowly and avoid quick maneuvers that can destabilize the cart.
  3. Distribute Weight Evenly: Ensure the golf cart’s load is evenly distributed. An unbalanced load can make the cart more likely to tip over, especially on slopes.
  4. Use Proper Safety Gear: Some modern golf carts come with seat belts. If available, always ensure that the safety equipment is used, and avoid standing passengers while moving on uneven terrain.
  5. Inspect the Area Before Driving: Before driving on hilly or unfamiliar terrain, inspect the area for potential hazards like embankments or sudden drop-offs that could lead to accidents.
  6. Avoid Driving in Extreme Conditions: Rain, loose soil, or gravel can make it difficult to maintain control, especially on hills. To minimize the risk of accidents, it’s advisable to avoid driving in such conditions.

While golf carts are generally considered safe, it’s essential to understand their limitations, particularly when dealing with uneven terrain. Keeping safety in mind can help prevent tragic accidents like the one that claimed Robert Vandornick’s life.
